ASSISI-SPOLETO
OLIVE BELT

A global knowledge heritage

The Assisi-Spoleto Olive Belt is a heritage comprising history and art, landscape and sights of artistic interestbelonging to the whole of humanity.
It has been recognised by the Italian Ministry of Agricultural, Food and Forestry Policies as a Rural landscapeof historic interest and by FAO as a global Agricultural heritage site.
A foothill land encompassing six municipalities (Spoleto,Campello sul Clitunno, Trevi, Foligno, Spello, Assisi) for a total surface area of 9,000 hectares.
The typical olive groves are the age-old result of culture, not spontaneous vegetation: a perfect balance between man and the environment.

THE OLIVE
BELT TRAILS

Protection, cataloguing and promotion

The “Olive Belt Trails” project aims at promoting the Assisi-Spoleto Olive Belt by:
digitally mapping a route across it that connects towns, villages and landscapes; by cataloguing and protecting its historic, artistic and environmental heritage; by enhancing and fostering appreciation of the region and promoting tourism linked with the discovery of oil.

The Olive Belt Trails project consists of five main routes:

Spoleto – Poreta
Poreta – Trevi
Trevi – Sassovivo
Sassovivo – Spello
Spello – Assisi

About 70 km, all mapped out, with extremely varying landscapes all sharing a single tradition: the culture of olive trees and oil.

OUR HISTORIC
AND ARTISTIC HERITAGE

A unique, living cultural landscape

Churches, abbeys, castles and villas. Dovecote towers, mills, votive shrines, millenary aqueducts.
Landscape, art and environment blend along the entire network of Olive Belt Trails, resulting in a consistent historical and regional character.
Franciscan sites, monastic retreats, Benedictine abbeys, Romanesque churches scattered along the medieval routes form a unique whole that is innate to the layout of the region.

The project aims at cataloguing and providing access to a little-known yet invaluable historical and artistic heritage.

04.
BIODIVERSITY
AND SUSTAINABILITY

Integrated tourism to protect the environment

The Olive Belt Trails project also aims at promoting environmental, sustainable and integrated tourism.
With its presence, it will also help protect and defend a unique landscape based on a delicate yet invaluable balance between the environment and man’s activities.

A unique climate – with the foothills of the pre-Apennine chain that shelter the “Spoleto valley” from cold winds – the ecological conditions of the soil, thepresence of native and primeval tree species make the Olive Belt an unparalleled whole that is one-of-a-kind.

A land where rich and typical fauna thrives, with large or small mammals, tetrapods, birds that find a safe haven in the olive groves.
Safeguarding the natural resources of these lands and promoting sustainable planning is one of the goals that the project has set itself.

SERVICES

Immerse yourself in a land’s history

The Olive Belt Trails project has been designed for certain types of users. It will aim at attracting sustainable tourism, to connect with  Umbria’s mystical side, its history, traditions and  landscape, with little-known trails  and by providing different ways of using them.

However, the project is also designed for local tourism. With the digital mapping of the hilly area and the cataloguing of the historical and artistic heritage, the project will enable those who know little about the beauty and available activities along the Olive Belt to fully enjoy the region with a sustainable approach.

MERCHANDISING

A single brand for six boroughs

The creation of the “I Sentieri della Fascia Olivata” brand opens up a wide range of opportunities connected with the promotion of the region for touristic purposes.
For the first time, creating a single system and integrating six boroughs with a highenvironmental, rural, historic, cultural and landscape value will mean promoting together a heritage with a wealth of experience that so far have not been actually made available in terms of inbound tourism.

“The Olive Belt Trails” will be presented with a strong emotional tone, using online media and social networks, which achieve a high emotional/evocative impact when displaying content.
These multiple digital narratives will be the promotional basis tosell local farming products and gadgets, as well as tourist services.
